Fireplace Safety ! If you use a fireplace to heat your home or simply for the atmosphere be sure to have it inspected and cleaned regularly. Cleaning the chimney removes dangerous build ups of pitch and other residues that can cause serious fires. Older single walled or unlined fire places and chimneys should be checked more often for signs of wear, cracks and loose mortar. And don’t forget to visually inspect the flu before you light! Open the damper wide for about 3 to 4 minutes and then check the air flow. If you do not feel a steady draft the flu and or chimney may be blocked by branches, leaves or even animal nests. Checking before you light will prevent a house full of smoke or something worse, a fire. |
